i live in sunny southern california and i heard that installing solar panels on your roof can fully power your home on a summer day! is this true? how much would it cost on average? my home is a two story home in the suburbs, lol what are the pros and cons of doing this?

No they are not worth it.I had some installed just to run my pool and I would have to live to be 200 years old to break even.

  1. Stephen P Said,

Well it depends on how sunny your day is, the sunnier the day is the more energy you get, im from the UK and over here you can apply to the government for money to buy the solar panels and basically you will be getting them for nothing!, see if there is any grants that you can get, i think the only con about them is they look very very ugly on a nice home roof

Do some looking around. There are some banks, along with some local governments that are sponsoring solar installations with low cost loans payable over 15 years. It is possible, in the right location, that the payments on the loan will be no more than your electric bill was, and your electric bills will drop by 80%, give or take. Call some of the local solar companies in your area, they should know.

    Also google solar installation loans.

weather is the top consideration next to sun availability.
the sunnier the better, more rain, typhoons or any tropical depressions is a NO NO to your solar panel.

The real truth is that a system to supply most of your power on sunny days is not cheap, $20,000 to $40,000 is typical for such a large system. Since solar power cells are so costly, it may take 20 years or more to come out ahead finacially. That is the projected life of these systems, so you don’t actually save any money. But it reduces carbon and saves the earth.

There is a tax credit for installing residential solar panels during 2009. The amount of the credit depends upon the size of the system you install and the percentage of power consumption you reduce by installing solar panels.

Cost effectiveness will depend on the size of the system you need.
The size of the system you will need depends on several factors, such as your average weather temperatures, your house insulation and heat loss / cooling loss factors, etc. No one on Yahoo can compute those things for you.

Contact a solar contractor in your area for more information. Remember asking is free.
