Solar hot water panels are referred to as “collectors”. There are a few different styles but the end result is the same. The collectors are generally mounted on the roof of a building, or on a wall. The collectors are just a portion of the entire system needed to heat and deliver hot water. There will be extensive plumbing, storage tanks, circulation system, a back up energy source for cloudy days.
There are several links on this page that will take you to reviewed and highly recommended sites that will help you learn all you want to know about solar hot water panels. In simple terms, a solar hot water system will transfer cold water to the collectors to be heated and then back to the storage tank ready for use. Some systems circulate a fluid with anti-freeze through the collectors back to a special storage tank containing (heat exchanger) coils of copper pipe filled with the heated fluid to heat the water.
The collectors can be built as simple as a wood box, with
insulation, series of copper coils, topped with black painted sheet metal, sealed with a pane of glass and a little silicone. The more efficient and costly collectors are a set of black metal tubes, vacuum packed in glass.
